my friend adrianne introduced me to the music of pokey lafarge last week, and to say that i’ve been obsessed is a bit of an understatement. i wanted to have his babies after hearing about 3 notes. his music is a blend of down-on-the-bayou bluegrass, blues, and roots music. and seriously, i can’t get enough. you might have to stage an intervention.
check him out on myspace. then download his session from daytrotter.
he is the musical savior i’ve been longing for.

whoopsie! forgot to post for a few days there.
in the meantime, i have discovered a new blog that i am slowly falling in love with: calivintage.
californa blogger erin posts about her vintage outfits. that’s about it. and i dig it immensely. i’m going to post a picture from her blog and hope that she doesn’t mind. i think she’s adorable.

she also has an etsy shop. visit!

this morning as i was brewing up a cup of coffee in my teeny tiny french press, i decided i wanted an old timey stove-top coffee percolator for those day (like today) when more than one cup of coffee would be nice. after breakfast i found one on etsy that i liked and emailed it to my mom and sister with a note that said, “this would be a good idea for a christmas or birthday gift for me” (my birthday is in 2 weeks). i suppose i should email them back and tell them to disregard that message because i found the EXACT SAME percolator at a thrift store in iowa city today for a third of the price! the fabulous 1950s design and the $7.50 price tag = my lucky day.
here she is:

now tell me that’s NOT completely fabulous. and the good news is that if you’re jealous, the one on etsy is still available!

i just read about artist and taxidermist sarina brewer in the february 2009 issue of BUST magazine and i have a new role model. she is retro-beautiful, creative, creepy, and is an art and biology geek just like me. but instead of making weird photos, she makes weird taxidermy mash-up sculptures out of deceased animals.
rest assured that the animals she uses in her art are NOT killed for the purpose of art. do y’all REALLY think i’d be into something like that? p’shaw. while i am a supporter of animal rights and am a vegetarian, i want to make it clear that i do not disapprove of madame brewer’s art. i think it is a creative – and creepy – use of animals’ bodies that might otherwise be disposed of and forgotten.
some of my favorite pieces

c’mon now – who doesn’t love to kick out the jams once in a while? i know i sure do. and two of my favorite bands to rock the eff out to on occasion are THE SOUNDS and SONS AND DAUGHTERS. they are loud but not obnoxious – they are stylized minus the pretention. listen to them now, i say!
THE SOUNDS offer an 80s twinged new wave pop/rock hybrid of fabulousness that my fella and i somehow always find ourselves listening to while visiting his folks at lake okoboji, iowa. it’s fun, catchy, and if it was a color, it would be hot pink.
one of my favorite songs from their album dying to say this to you – “ego”

* * *
SONS AND DAUGHTERS are a scottish quartet who “have fashioned a distinct sound inspired by the melancholy storytelling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the raw power of country, blues, and folk filtered through their punk adolescence. “This Gift” develops this sound into a whirlwind of tarnished sixties glamour, referencing celebrity culture, cult films, and literary classics.” (via amazon)
this song (“gilt complex”) made me immediately buy the album from iTunes, and i have never regretted it. turn it up, bitches!

naturally, as a huge bird nerd and an appreciator of all things vintage, i am an adoring fan of vintage bird prints. and where is one of the best places on the web to find such a thing? why, the holcroft etsy shop, that’s where!
not only do they sell lovely bird prints, but they sell vintage botanical and anatomical prints, old maps, and old illustrations (like norman rockwell stuff). if i made a WANT list for that store, it would be a mile long.

i have been lusting after a pair of frye campus boots for a long time. i’ve searched the interwebz high and low for a bargain pair because as much as i would love to plunk down $300 for a newbies, i just can’t afford to do that, no matter how i rationalize it to myself.
thank goodness i had the intuitive sense to browse etsy last night. i scored a pair of gently used dingo brand campus-style boots for less than $50 – and that INCLUDES shipping!
they may not be not fryes, but they’re fine by me. it’s the style i wanted anyway – not the name.
behold!

i am planning a swingin’ retro birthday party for myself this year, and would love to find a fancy yet affordable 1950s cocktail dress to wear for the big night. unfortunately, the beautiful dresses sold in the timeless vixen vintage etsy shop are a little out of my price range, but if i had the money, i would buy them all and pretend that my world included old chevys, martinis, and lounge music.
